Currently In The Market For A New Set Of Golf Irons; Advice Needed.?
Before answering my question let me explain what type of golfer i am and my style of play. i am a 20 year old, 6 foot male with a handicap of about 25. my biggest weakness is my inability to hit with a driver (currently using a taylormade r5 that i won in a raffle); actually i struggle from the tee pretty much 80% of the time, even if i am not using a driver. however, i excel at 50-30 yards from the pin and often save bogey or double bogey on a hole due to my ability to chip and putt. i will go in more detail about each aspect of my game to help you guys give my accurate advice. as a side note, i am currently using a set of wilson 1200 ge irons from the 80 's. needless to say i think it 's time for an upgrade.like i said i excel from 50-30 yards out. i may be a 25 handicapper, but i most certainly chip like a single digit handicapper and putt like a bogey golfer. i usually two putt my way to the hole unless i chipped it in or i am close enough to tap in. i am in no need for a putter or wedge as i have my trusty cg14 wedge at 56 degrees and 14 bounce and my cleveland classic brz mallet putter, both which i am comfortable with. so, as a result, i do not need a set with extensive wedges or a box set with drivers and a putter. i could use help with my mid game, which is where the new iron set comes in. my iron game is better than what my handicap suggests as well. i hit my 5 iron at 165, my 6 iron 155, my 7 iron 145, and so on. i get pretty good distance of my irons, which i am happy about, however, it 's consistency that i struggle with. i have those beautiful shots every round where i hit the ball right on the sweet spot and it goes flying, but the problem is it 's too small with my wilson 's and without a swing that is 100% repeatable i will never hit that consistent with my wilson player irons. however, if i catch fire with my 5 iron, i usually have no trouble hitting it. i guess i am looking for irons that forgiving on mishits or irons with a larger sweet spot, however i want some control with distance. i have a problem investing in game improvement irons because i can already hit the ball far, i don 't need my 5 iron going 200 yards on me and stuck at 120 yards out and not being able to use anything. finally, i suck at the tee box. i can 't hit anything but a miserable 200 yard slice or a 30 yard hook. there have been days where i can hit the driver perfectly and it goes 250+ yards and straight. lately i have no confidence in the driver and have resorted to my 5 iron to tee off, but even then i psych out. i am a golfer who could greatly improve with more forgiving irons and i think i could become a bogey golfer or better with consistency since my short game is stellar. i understand that a lot of my issues need to be fix by a professional, and i plan on doing so next season or later this season, but i also think new irons would be extremely beneficial as well. lastly, i was hoping for irons in or around the $300 price range; i am currently looking at the wilson di9 set, but haven 't tried any at the local golfers warehouse. thanks for the advice in advance!the jeff, thanks i knew i was going to get this response, and i respect it because it is true that i need a pro to help. what should i look for in a pro to instruct me. i obviously don 't want one who will confuse me more than anything else. "ok i think i figured it out so feel free to corect me if im wrong. each individual hole has a set number of par one can be 5 par another 4 another 3 etc etc. so for simplicity lets say all holes are 5 par. in order to achieve a score of 0 or more (well by more i mean less than 0 since negative numbers is a good thing in golf) by the end of all 9 holes, id have to get the ball in every hole in 5 strokes or less correct? (of course if i take more than 5 strokes in some holes that would mean id have to dopo other holes in less than 5 to make up for it) (Read answers)
